These starchy tubers gradually made their way to Europe after Spanish explorers brought them back from their voyages to the New World. Initially met with skepticism, potatoes eventually became a staple crop, helping to combat food shortages and transform diets across Europe. Today, potatoes are one of the world’s most consumed and beloved vegetables, with an incredible diversity of varieties and culinary applications that continue to captivate our taste buds and nourish our
bodies. Exploring the history of potatoes offers a glimpse into the profound impact this small vegetable has had on human culture, agriculture, and cuisine throughout the ages.
Potatoes come in various types, each with unique flavors and uses. Round white potatoes are the perfect ingredient for baking with their moistness and soft texture. Sweet potatoes are naturally sweet and versatile in both sweet and savory dishes. Russet potatoes are high in starch, perfect for baking and frying. Today, Better Made uses 60 million pounds of chip potatoes every year and the entire process is a little more complex. The potatoes are purchased in bulk (45,000 to 85,000 pounds per truckload) and unloaded from delivery trucks which are lifted by a hydraulic lift. The potatoes are then transported by conveyors to storage bins.
As needed the potatoes are automatically conveyed to the fryers where they are washed, peeled, sliced, and inspected. Next, the potato slices are conveyed to temperature-controlled cookers where only 100%
cottonseed oil is used.
The cooked chips are then lightly salted and automatically advanced by an overhead vibrating conveyor system to automatic packaging machines that weigh, form, fill, and seal the finished bags.
Despite their often-dismissed reputation as just a “starchy” vegetable, potatoes are a nutritional powerhouse. Packed with essential vitamins and minerals, they offer a range of health benefits that make them a valuable addition to any diet. From being an excellent source of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that boosts the immune system and supports healthy skin, to providing a rich dose of dietary fiber, aiding digestion, and promoting a feeling of fullness, potatoes prove to be a satisfying and healthy option. Their potassium content contributes to maintaining proper heart function and regulating blood pressure. Who needs bananas anyway?
